Dark Souls Boardgame Weekend

Crabby Old Gamer and I sat down to some Dark Souls the boardgame this weekend and it took us about 6 hours to clear all the tiles and make it to the final boss. We did rather well after one of the worst starts ever. By the time we made it to the final boss sadly we had only one spark and one shot at him

We laid about 20 points of damage on him and got him to within his heat up mode but sadly we just did not have the health and stamina to succeed. The final boss was the Gargoyle. We had him cornered a lot of the time, but it was the early part of the game that really cost us. We died a lot early and just could not get the proper gear. We also got some horrible tile combos with magic arrow shooting baddies and a lot of stuff we just had trouble killing.

I was the mercenary and he was the herald.

A history of one of the units in OCS Smolensk

Thursday I setup a fake combat example to test the combat rules in the OCS system and decided to look up the history of the Wehrmacht 17th Infantry Division. Some interesting details about the unit on Wikipedia and in the book Slaughterhouse.

"The unit was formed in October 1934 in Nuremberg under the designation Wehrgauleitung Nürnberg. Shortly after its creation it was renamed Artillerieführer VII.[Note 1] Although created as an en cadre division from the very beginning, both names were intended to suggest much smaller units, as German military strength was still restricted by the Treaty of Versailles. After Adolf Hitler renounced the treaty, and officially announced the creation of the Wehrmacht in October 1935, the unit was renamed to the 17th Infantry Division.

The organic regimental units of this division were formed by the expansion of the 21st Bavarian Infantry Regiment of the 7th Infantry Division of the Reichswehr. The division participated in the annexation of Austria in March 1938. During the Invasion of Poland it was reinforced by the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler and attached to the German Eighth Army of Gen. Johannes Blaskowitz. Under command of Gen. Herbert Loch, the division took part in heavy fighting in Silesia, then in the vicinity of Łódź. At Pabianice it faced elements of the Polish 28th Infantry Division and the Wołyńska Cavalry Brigade. After the war, the Poles accused the division of committing atrocities."

Smolensk Operational Combat Series Part 1: Supply Process and Questions

This video is the start of a OCS playthrough of Smolensk: Barbarossa Derailed and the small introduction scenario that comes with the game. In this video I have 3-4 questions I am confused on rules wise and if I can get that straight in my head I am ready to move on and start.

The game begins on 8 July with Barbarossa still in high gear. In August, the advance stalls as Hitler diverts most of the panzers from the map to forces around Leningrad and Kiev. Soviet counteroffensives will push Army Group Center close to the breaking point by game’s end on 8 September.
